  • No, dermal filler is not the same as Botox. While both are injectable, minimally invasive cosmetic treatments, they work differently; Botox “freezes” muscles to smooth wrinkles caused by expressions, while dermal fillers fill in areas that have lost volume.

  • Dermal filler is a minimally invasive injection that provides fullness and volume to the face and lips.

As we age, we lose volume in our cheeks, lips and around the mouth. By replacing the volume loss with filler, you can achieve a more youthful appearance. The most common type of filler is composed of hyaluronic acid which naturally occurs in the body and adds plumpness to the skin.

Lips are the most commonly injected area on the face. Fillers can also be injected mid-face, jawline around the mouth, under eye and chin areas. Dermal filler typically lasts 6 months to several years, but can vary from patient to patient.

  • Examples include:

    • Plump up thin lips, giving a full and hydrated look

    • Enhance or fill in shallow areas on the face

    • Decrease or remove the shadow or wrinkles under the eyes

    • Fill in or soften the look of recessed scars

    • Fill in or soften static wrinkles, especially on the lower face

  • Botox is the most common cosmetic procedure in America, and the most common brand name used for wrinkle relaxers, although there are many options. All available options are known to help in the treatment of wrinkles. Each is a type of botulinum that is injected under the skin to still a group of targeted muscles. Botox or any similar procedure is considered noninvasive, relaxing the muscles under the skin so the area will smooth out. These injections can also be effective in deep wrinkle prevention.

  • Examples include:

    • Decrease “expression lines”

    • Lines on the upper face such as the “11” between the brows and the horizontal lines on the forehead

    • “Crows feet” wrinkles around the eyes

    • A fine upper lip; Botox injections can create a full upper lip, known as the “lip flip”

    • Sharpen the jawline

    • Improve neck lines or bands

    • Treats hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)

    • Helps when TMJ symptoms are driven by muscle overactivity, such as: jaw clenching/teeth grinding (bruxism), jaw pain or tightness, headaches related to jaw tension, enlarged (“bulky”) jaw muscles, facial slimming

  • The answer is different for every patient. Amount needed is dependent on the age, strength of facial muscles, established lines and other factors, including desired results. Every patient receives a detailed facial assessment prior to injection to determine dosing.

  • Dermal fillers may take up to 2 weeks to settle in. Many people get filler and head back to the office the same day.

Botox and other wrinkle relaxers can take 4 - 14 days to see a reduction in wrinkles.

  • On average, dermal filler lasts typically lasts 6 months to several years, but everyone can metabolize it differently.

Botox patients typically return every 3 - 4 months, dependent on a variety of factors including age, expressions and facial muscle strength.
